It’s opening night for the Joffrey’s Nutcracker at the Fox! Here is our party boy just before leaving for the theatre. If you are attending tonight, Saturday night, or the Sunday matinee, Audrey is the party boy in the blue sailor suit.

These fun Nutcracker facts came in an email from Dance St. Louis today:

  • Robert Joffrey’s nostalgic Victorian version of The Nutcracker is one of the Joffrey Ballet’s largest and most richly detailed productions.
  • The teapot that is on stage for “Tea from China,” one of the entertainments in the Kingdom of Sweets, is 5 feet tall by 7 feet long. Watch for the “steam”!
  • The dress for Mother Ginger, the 14-foot-tall puppet designed by Kermit Love of Sesame Street fame, contains more than 100 yards of fabric. When Mother Ginger travels, she needs five separate crates.
  • The Christmas tree in Clara’s family parlor grows to become 23 feet 3 inches tall and 16 feet wide at the base, and has 46 individually wrapped gifts beneath it.
  • During the shows at the Fox this weekend, the Snow Forest scene will require more than 50 pounds of flame-proof paper-punch snow mixed with hand-cut silver paper to make the snow sparkle.
  • The production uses 200 costumes and 172 pairs of boots and shoes.
