Be flexible!

It’s a simple concept, but one that is often overlooked. We work hard at planning a course for our student and when difficulty arises we tend to want to buckle down, forge ahead, and keep going. “We’re going to get through this book if it kills us.” This can be tough for the parent and frustrating for the student. It’s discouraging for all. Step back and take a look at the direction you are going. Sometimes a course of study that worked so well for one student in a family doesn’t work at all for another. Be flexible! Get out of that box. If the math book isn’t working, find another. Ask around for advice. That’s what your homeschool support group is for. Recognizing, and catering to, each child’s learning style is the key to successful homeschooling.

Great words of wisdom! I know some of our worst moments homeschooling are when I try to make a child fit a curriculum that is just wrong for him.

    Amen to this!

As someone who was always an overachiever in school, it is hard for me not to want to push the kids along. I have had to force myself to take things a lot slower than I really want to, especially with having a child with Autism.
