Eyewitness Travel’s Top 10 New York City lists the Hudson Hotel as one of the top 10 hip hotels. Definitely hip and trendy, the Hudson is a great place to stay if you are heading to the big apple. We booked our stay at the Hudson through a blind Priceline.com bid. The rate we got was incredible! I had read a bit about the Hudson, but once I was booked I began reading more and more online reviews. Unfortunately, most were not favorable. Folks complained of small rooms, rude staff, and a general state of disrepair. So, here is my review of our June 26 – July 3, 2010 stay at the Hudson Hotel.
Two of us stayed in a standard double. Yes, the room is small, but who goes to New York to hang out in the hotel room. Although small, the Hudson makes use of every bit of space. Our room featured the following:
- Sufficient hanging space, as well as floor space, in an open closet with one suitcase rack.
- Top shelf in the closet area has a safe that will accommodate a laptop and more.
- Bathroom has a large shower.
- Three shelves above toilet provide enough space for bathroom and cosmetic essentials.
- Bathroom is stocked with complimentary Korres products: shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and moisturizer.
- A hair dryer as well as an iron and full-size ironing board are provided.
- A small desk is perfect for a laptop and charging space for phones and cameras.
- Hidden closet contains a small pull-out flat screen tv and a small cd stereo.
- The hidden closet also has one large drawer and a couple of deep shelves.
- The bed and pillows are very comfy.
- The room is bright and airy.
- Small nightstands on either side of the bed hold phone, alarm clock, and an ipod dock
- There is a window from the shower looking into the bedroom. There are 2 sheer curtains – one inside the shower, and one in the bedroom behind the desk. Needless to say we kept the curtains shut.
- Our 23rd floor corner room had two windows, one with a view of Lincoln Center and the other of Hudson River.
- WiFi is available in the room for $10/24 hour period. Because we were on the top floor in the corner, our signal was poor and we were comped for 3 of the 5 days we used it.
The hotel is not brand new, but our room was in very good shape. Nothing was in a state of disrepair. Halls are somewhat dark with spot lighting above each door, but the halls were not too dark, nor were they scary. Each floor features a canteen near the elevators with ice machine, vending machines, and drink machines, as well as a counter/bar for eating. Every staff member we came in contact with was pleasant and helpful.
Check in is 3 pm. We arrived early and checked our baggage and took off site seeing. Check out is noon, but 1 pm is acceptable.
Although we didn’t visit them, there are a couple of interesting bars, one with music and dancing.
The location was perfect for us. If you are headed to the ballet, Lincoln Center is just 3 short blocks away. Just a few minutes in the other direction and you are in Times Square. Great midtown location with a variety of small eating places within walking distance. Just across the street is the Time Warner building with a Whole Foods in the lower level. The Columbus Circle subway station is also below this building.
The Hudson is a great location, at a good price, and it’s a cool looking place to stay in New York City.
