The Kentucky Derby!
Saturday afternoon is the “run for the roses.” The Kentucky Derby is the first in three races that make up the Triple Crown. The Preakness and the Belmont Stakes are the other two jewels in the Crown. Triple Crown winners are few and far between and that makes them all the more special. In fact, in 130 years there have only been 11 Triple Crown winners. The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978 preceded by Seattle Slew in 1977. And, in 1973 we saw the greatest thoroughbred in racing history, Secretariat, take all three races. Before this recent run of Triple Crown winners, we have to go back to Citation in 1948. We’ve had some close calls in recent years, but no cigar. I say this every year, and I will say it again: I’m ready for another triple crown. Here is the latest list of contenders for this year’s Kentucky Derby. Is there a Triple Crown in the bunch?
