Dear Catholic Homeschool Leaders,
If possible, can you share this information with your local group.My name is Maureen Wittmann. I’m a homeschooling mom and author here in Michigan. As I’m sure you’re all are aware already, Michigan requires a 1/2 credit class taken online for graduation. Fortunately, homeschoolers are not obligated by the law to follow this graduation requirement unless they want to take advantage of the Michigan Merit Award. However, I did run into a small glitch when I graduated my daughter early — the state college would not except her application until I showed that she had all the state requirements (which she met easily).
I’m sharing this with you because I own a company called Homeschool Connections that provides online classes for Catholic homeschoolers. Our courses appear to meet the state requirement plus we have the added benefit of a Catholic focus. If your high school children are no longer homeschooled they are still welcome to join us.
The instructors of the courses are Catholic college professors who are carving out time from their summers to serve Catholic high school students. I’m really excited about having these two gentleman teaching for Homeschool Connections.
We use webinar technology for our online courses. The students can see and hear the professor via a webcam and microphone. In turn, the students can communicate with the professor through the chat room or their own microphone. There is also a Power Point presentation that is viewable on the same screen. The teens love the technology.

This is an awesome opportunity to keep teens engaged and learning over the summer. These particular courses have been designed for summer time with no or light homework. Also, all classes are recorded so if you’re away on vacation for a week or two, and can’t access the Internet, you can simply watch the recorded event later. In fact, registered students have access to the recorded classes for 6 months. This is a great value for the price!

There is a way to check your particular computer system to se if it is compatible with the online classroom at Homeschool Connections. Although my computer checked out fine, when my actual class took place I was unable to connect to the classroom. There are some great courses being offered here and I haven’t given up yet! I’ll be back for sure.
