Sharing despite Google Reader!

There have been a lot of changes to Google Reader, and not all of them are for the better. One change that I really felt was the removal of the “share” button. I pointed the RSS feed of my shared items to this blog’s sidebar. It was a great way to share blog posts from all over the web. With the discontinuation of “share” and addition of +1, this was no longer possible.

My solution:

  • open a tumblr account
  • set up a very basic blog
  • add tumblr and your new tumblr blog to the “send to” option in Reader
  • grab your tumblr rss and point it to your blog – I used a tumblr widget for wordpress

Now my “shared” items are back!

Ooh! Not sure, but in my Tumblr Widget for WordPress there was an option as to whether to let the links take you to the new tumblr blog or the original post – I deselected that. Do you see that option?

I set up a Tumblr account, too! Can you share the link to your RSS? I’ve switched to Feedly and I can add that RSS to my feed.

I was so bummed when the reader rss went away. Took me a while, but I figured tumblr was the easiset way to go. I see you are follwoing, so you probably don’t need this:

It’s nice to be able to “share” again!

I use the free version of WordPress, so I have to use the RSS feed widget and I can’t deselect the link. So it goes to the Tumblr, unfortunately.

I still can share my items on Google and have them show up on my blog, but there isn’t a page that lists them. I am keeping both of them for now, although they are duplicated for now. I hate losing all those old shared items.
